H.B.Y.C. Club Racing - Notice of Race

1. Eligibility
1. Any Mono or Multihull with
1. A valid certificate of fitness – per SAMSA requirements for vessels longer than 9m.
2. A valid Club Handicap Rating on the RCYC database of club handicaps.
3. A minimum of 3 boats on the start line is required to constitute a race. If less than 3 entrants, that race will be cancelled.
2. Venue and Courses
1. Hout Bay, Chapmans Bay, not usually further than Vulcan Rock.
2. Courses will include:
1. Windward-Leeward and Triangular courses in Hout Bay.
2. Occasional longer courses to Vulcan Rock and towards Kommetjie.
3. Safety
1. The decision to participate in any club race is the sole decision of the skipper.
2. Skippers to hold appropriate qualifications for their vessel, usually min SAS Day skippers ticket.
3. The race committee may use their discretion to cancel racing, or to abandon a race,  should weather conditions not be suitable for the majority of the fleet.
4. All yachts to monitor VHF-71  during racing.
4. Bridge
1. Racing instructions will be issued over VHF-71.
2. Flags will not usually be used.
3. The onus is on skippers to request clarity on race instructions from the bridge (should there be any doubt), and are requested to acknowledge racing instructions by radio.
4. Bridge is entitled to communicate with yachts individually to  clarify racing instructions.
5. Bridge may often be run from a participating yacht, the clubhouse, or a committee-boat.
5. Prizes and Scoring
1. Prizes for individual races 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd place.
2. Series results will be scored on the low-points system.
3. Series results will allow discards equal to  1/3 of the total number of races sailed.
4. Series results will not contribute to the Club Champs event, or vice versa.
6. Protests and Redress
1. Any skipper wanting to lodge a protest or request for redress shall apply to the race officer with 60 minutes of first vessel finishing, either by radio, or in person.
2. The protest committee will endeavour to hold the protest immediately if circumstances allow. However, if for reasons of unavailability of a suitable committee, or time constraints, or similar, the race committee may elect to hold the hearing after the following club race. In this case results will be marked provisional.
3. Penalties taken on the water will be in the form of a single 360 – including a tack and a gybe, and may be taken at anytime before crossing the finish line. Yachts performing penalty turns should advise the bridge by radio shortly before.
4. Protest committee will usually be appointed by the RC Sailing or Commodore, and may include The Club Commodore, Club President, RC Keelboats (where available and not parties to the protest), and may include sailing members of other boats not directly involved in the incident.
5. Protests will be held in the function room of the yacht club, unless not available.
7. Rules
1. Notwithstanding the changes to the rules as noted above, the  ISAF rules 2009-12 will apply.

Megafreight wins the HBYC Club Champs in Jan 2010! Hotly contested by Irish Mist, Faraway and Shosholoza. A small plaque will be placed onto the Sailing Ship Trophy, which will be HOTLY CONTESTED AGAIN IN A FEW MONTHS!!

NOTICE OF RACE

DATES
The Hout Bay Yacht Club Championships will be held over the weekend of 7,8 November 2009
Prize giving will be held soon after racing on Sunday 8th November at a time to be advised

ORGANISING AUTHORITY AND RULES
Organising Authority is Hout Bay Yacht Club (Sailing Committee), under auspices of South African Sailing (SAS)
Regatta will be sailed in terms of ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012

RACE OFFICE
Race Office will be the HBYC Club Office 021 790 3110
Regatta Notice-board will be the regular notice-board in the club house (upstairs)

ELIGIBILITY
Open to any monohull or multihull yachts having a current PHRF Rating.
Entries from other SA Yacht Clubs are welcome!
All yachts will sail under a single PHRF Class

ENTRIES
Entry fee is R100 per boat, payable into HBYC Bank account as follows:

Skippers and Crew must be paid up members of a South African Yacht Club in good standing with South African Sailing (SAS)
Race Committee will be the final authority on PHRF ratings.

SAFETY
All yachts will comply with South African Safety requirements as defined by SAS for Category C.
Race Committee reserves the right to inspect and/or disqualify any entry not complying with the Safety Requirements.
Chart San 1015 shall be carried for the duration of the Regatta.
All vessels must carry VHF radios capable of receiving and transmitting on VHF Channels 16 and 71.
Skippers shall hold the minimum of SAS Day Skippers tickets during the regatta.

INSPECTIONS
At the request of the Race Committee, vessel inspections may be carried out at any time during the Regatta – between 0900 on Sat 7 November 2009, and 17:00 Sunday 8 November 2009.

RACES
Racing will commence not earlier than 10:30 on 7 and 8 November 2009.
Round the Cans Races (RTC) will be sailed in Hout Bay between Hout Bay Beach and Kommetjie Lighthouse depending on conditions.
Amendments to the racing schedule will be published on the Regatta Notice-board.
It is intended that 6 races will be sailed over the two days.
Three races completed shall constitute a regatta.


SCORING
Regatta will be scored as provided under Appendix A of ISAF RRS using the Low Point System.
A single discard race may be allowed at the discretion of the race committee if more than three races have been completed.
Spinnaker allowances will not be permitted in this event.

PENALTIES
All reference in RRS 44.1 and 44.2 to two-Turns penalties are replaced with One-Turn penalties including a Tack and a Gybe.

CREWS
Skipper shall ensure that sufficient crew are available to manage the vessel safely at all times.
Individual class rules regarding crew number or weight restrictions shall be adhered to.

PRIZES
Prizes shall be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in the Regatta, and otherwise as the race committee sees fit

ADVERTISING
No restrictions unless we get a sponsor nearer the time!

MOORINGS
Visiting yacht entries will be allowed free mooring from 1 Nov 2009 until 15 Nov 2009.

LIABILITY
Competitors sail entirely at heir own risk. The onus on whether to start or continue in a race lies entirely with the skipper of that yacht. None of the organizations or persons concerned with the running of the regatta accepts any liability for damage or injury, material or personal, suffered during the races or at any other time – however arising.

PROTESTS
Protests will be entertained at the discretion of the race committee only.

MTU Admirals 2008 - Pursuit Race Results

The pursuit race was held on May 1 2008 in fresh-strong conditions from Hout bay to Cape Town  -a downwind dash with very fast finishing times from all boats.

 

Congratulations to Smackwater Jack (Trygve and crew) who finished first! Second place was Lapwing (L34), and in 3rd was Charlotte (Miura).

Hi Sailors,

Note the results for race 4 of the 2007/8 Summer series. You will have noticed that we are publishing results in two formats - viz with and without skipper handicaps. In most cases the results are not different but it is useful for competitors to see how they are doing in pure PHRF terms - while the club (skippers handicaps) makes the racing more competitive and fun on the night.

It was great to see a good turnout last night (wed) in the fresh conditions - with some courageous sailing from Ragtime and Shosholoza especially!

Micah is away surfing in Morocco but will be back soon to rejoin the action.

Thanks to Gavin and Vanessa for laying the course and the bridgework, and many thanks too to Pieter Roelofse and Cathy for donating some excellent champagne from Hout Bay Vineyards for the prizes!!
